Degree Requirements
Students entering a Stern MBA program are required to hold a four-year bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the U.S. or an equivalent degree from a foreign country (in some cases, this is a three-year degree).
If you submit your application prior to the conferral of your bachelor's degree or equivalent, we will accept and evaluate your application. If an offer of admission is made, it will be contingent upon receiving your degree conferral prior to enrollment.
Transcript Requirements for the Online Application
There are two options for submitting an unofficial transcript via the online application:
1. Upload a scanned copy (recommended if possible).
2. Complete and upload the Self-Reported Transcript Form.
It is strongly recommended that you use your official transcript as a reference when submitting a self-reported transcript. The Admissions Committee reserves the right to withdraw an offer of admission at any time, prior to or after enrolling, if there is any discrepancy between the scanned/self-reported transcript and the official transcript.
International Applicants
If your original transcript is not in English, you must use the Self-Reported Transcript Form.
Instructions for Using the Self-Reported Transcript Form
List the name and course number of each course exactly as it appears on your official transcript. If your transcript is not in English, provide an accurate English Translation of the course title.
List the grade or mark for each course exactly as it appears on your official transcript. Do not reinterpret grades or convert grades to a different scale.
Include courses taken that do not contribute to your overall score/grade (e.g. classes that were dropped, withdrawn from, incomplete, taken pass/fail, taken more than once, etc.)
Carefully match the courses taken with the appropriate semester/term dates, exactly as they appear on your official transcript. Include terms for any summer, winter, transfer, exchange, or study abroad courses.
If you are in the process of completing a degree, please include the names of any courses in which you are currently enrolled and note them as "in progress."
Official Transcript Requirement for Enrollment
Admitted students are required to provide an official copy of all academic transcripts and proof of their degree conferral prior to enrollment. Instructions are communicated upon admission.
Do not send official transcripts to NYU Stern unless instructed to do so.
Curriculum Vitae:
Please upload your resume, which should include both full-time, post-college work experience and educational information. Internships, other part-time employment, extra-curricular activities or volunteer activities may be included.
If your employment status changes after you have applied, you must upload an updated resume to the application status page.
Personal Statement:
Our Stern essay questions give you the opportunity to more fully present yourself to the Admissions Committee and to provide insight into your experiences, goals, and thought processes.
Your essays must be written entirely by you. An offer of admission will be rescinded if you did not write your essays.

What are your short and long-term career goals?
How will the MBA help you achieve them?
Essay 2: Program Preferences
NYU Stern offers a portfolio of MBA programs designed to meet the needs of our applicants. Your program preferences are very important as you will be admitted to only one program. You cannot switch your program option after receiving your admissions decision.
A. Primary Program Preference (250 word maximum, double-spaced, 12-point font)
Please indicate the primary MBA program for which you would like to be considered, as indicated in the Primary Program Selection section of the application.
Explain why the program you have selected is the best program for you.
B. Alternative Program Preference(s) (250 word maximum, double-spaced, 12-point font)
Please indicate any alternative program(s) for which you would also like to be considered, as indicated in the Alternative Program Selection section of the application and why you would also like to be considered for this/these program(s).
An alternate program does not need to be selected. If you have no alternate programs you do not need to complete this essay, just indicate "N/A".
Essay 3: Personal Expression (a.k.a. "Pick Six")
Describe yourself to the Admissions Committee and to your future classmates using six images and corresponding captions. Your uploaded PDF should contain all of the following elements:
A brief introduction or overview of your "Pick Six" (no more than 3 sentences).
Six images that help illustrate who you are.
A one-sentence caption for each of the six images that helps explain why they were selected and are significant to you.
Note: Your visuals may include photos, infographics, drawings, or any other images that best describe you. Your document must be uploaded as a single PDF. The essay cannot be sent in physical form or be linked to a website.
Essay 4: Additional Information (optional)
(250 word maximum, double-spaced, 12-point font)
Please provide any additional information that you would like to bring to the attention of the Admissions Committee. This may include current or past gaps in employment, further explanation of your undergraduate record or self-reported academic transcript(s), plans to retake the GMAT, GRE, IELTS or TOEFL, or any other relevant information
Recommendation Letter:
Choosing Your Recommenders
You are required to submit two professional recommendations with your application.
One recommendation must come from your current supervisor. If you cannot include a recommendation from your current supervisor, you must provide an explanation in the optional essay in the online application.
Recommendations should come from individuals who can objectively assess your professional performance and your potential for success in NYU Stern's MBA program and in your future career.
Professional recommendations are strongly preferred.
Recommendations from family members, family friends and close friends are discouraged.
Submitting more than two recommendations is not encouraged but is allowed. Please carefully consider whether additional recommendations add significant value and a new and unique perspective to your application.
Professional Recommendation Questions
Your recommenders will be asked to rate you on a number of professional abilities and qualities, as well as provide an answer to these four questions:
Please provide a brief description of your interaction with the applicant and, if applicable, the applicant's role in your organization.
How does the applicant's performance compare to that of other well-qualified individuals in similar roles? Please provide specific examples. (E.g. what are the applicant's principal strengths?)
Describe the most important piece of constructive feedback you have given the applicant. Please detail the circumstances and the applicant's response.
(Optional) Is there anything else we should know?
Your recommenders may answer these questions in the recommendation form or by uploading a Word or PDF document.
Recommendations must be submitted online
If your recommender cannot submit an online recommendation, you must email sternmba@stern.nyu.edu to explain the circumstances and request approval for your recommender to submit a paper recommendation.
If your recommender cannot complete a recommendation in English, he or she will need to complete a paper recommendation, following the instructions above, and have it translated into English. A certified English translation through a translating service must be obtained and submitted in a sealed envelope with the original recommendation, endorsed across the seal.
As the EQ endorsement is a new component of the application, we recognize that some applicants may inadvertently send a Professional Recommendation form to an EQ endorser or an EQ Endorsement form to someone writing a professional recommendation. The Admissions Committee will move forward with its review of your application using the forms submitted. Please note that this is an update to our application instructions.
Work History:
To supplement your resume with key information about your career to date, you will be prompted to add employment information for all positions you have held via the "Add Position" function. You must include all full-time, post-college work experience. Internships and other part-time employment may be included.
EQ Endorsement:
Choosing Your Endorser
You are required to submit one EQ Endorsement with your application.
The endorsement must be from someone who knows you personally and/or professionally and can act as a persuasive advocate of your EQ strengths.
Immediate family members should not write your EQ Endorsement.
EQ Endorsement Question
Your EQ endorser will be provided with a definition of IQ + EQ and why it is important at NYU Stern, and will be asked to respond to the following prompt:
Please provide one specific and compelling example to demonstrate the applicant’s emotional intelligence. (250 word maximum)
Endorsements must be submitted online
If your endorser cannot submit an online endorsement, you must email sternmba@stern.nyu.edu to explain the circumstances and request approval for your endorser to submit a paper endorsement.
