Summary Section of Resume:
1. It’s ideal that this section has something unique about you. Don’t talk about what you’re looking for as far as what you want to learn during a summer internship. Keep it focused on the value you will BRING to an organization. What are your individual talents. This might look like:
Mathematical Finance graduate student with exception skills in keeping calm during a market swing and focused on goals leading to effective trade strategy results looking for an algo trading summer internship to contribute to an organization’s bottom line.
2. Don’t waste space by saying, Graduate Student in the Mathematical Finance Program….just shorten that to “Mathematical Finance graduate student”
Education part of Resume:
1. School, Degree, GPA, Year should be all in one line, ie:
a. Boston University M.S. Mathematical Finance [GPA x.x] expected Jan 2017
2. Your GRE, TOEFL Scores do not matter to employers
3. If you’re adding your GPA, do not put x.x/4….just use the x.x Employers know it’s out of 4. Rule of thumb is to only add your GPA if it’s 3.5 or higher.
4. The template may not be upgraded but there is no longer a “School of Management” at BU. There is only the “Questrom School of Business” so if you’re adding this and you have room, please keep this in mind. Thank you!!! I will update the templates for the next incoming class. My apologies for this.
Experience Part of Resume:
1. Projects and professional experience are both considered ‘experience’. Please put them together here. It might look like this:
Financial Analyst, State Street Corporation, Boston, MA (Internship) Jun-Aug 2015
The bullet points of what you did and if you had a positive impact on the company, please be sure to state it
Black Scholes Formula Project (C++), Boston University 2015
The bullet points of what you were solving, what you did, and what you learned or results.
2. Do not add the month to Project timeframes, just the year. This will give you flexibility as to where you want to put it on your resume.
3. Please NEVER use “Intern” as title. You can add (Internship) like I did above in the State Street example. If you didn’t have a title, create one that matches what you did.
4. When it comes to putting dates, the month is first and the slash is acceptable, not the period to separate month and year. Additionally, if you’re using letters, then use the first three of the month only. If it’s within the same year, do not repeat the start date with the year and the end date. Here’s what I mean:
Skills, Languages, and Interests Part of Resume:
1. Do not waste space by labeling above and listing below…keep them on the same line like this:
SKILLS: C++, Excel, Black Scholes, VaR, etc.
LANGUAGE: English, Mandarin, Hindi, etc.
INTERESTS: Skiing, Travel, Tennis, Science Fiction, etc.
2. Do not add the “etc.”…I just did that as I don’t know what your preferences are
3. Do not add what your skill level for a programming tool is or a language..simply list what they are. More than that is too much information.
