The University of Exeter’s College of College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, in partnership with Renishaw plc, is inviting applications for a fully-funded PhD studentship to commence in September 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. For eligible students the studentship will cover UK/EU tuition fees plus an annual tax-free stipend of at least £15,009 for 3.5 years full-time, or pro rata for part-time study. The student would be based in Renishaw Plc, Lower Trelake Business Park, Whitestone, Exeter, and also in the College of Engineering at the Streatham Campus in Exeter.
A cutting edge, industry-based Control Engineering PhD opportunity with Renishaw, based at their Hexapod Technology Centre, near Exeter. You’ll be working as a member of the R&D Team to deliver new insights and understanding of the hexapod platform mechanism. Applying newly discovered knowledge to deliver improvements in system control and development. Hexapods are a type of parallel robot with linear actuators providing six degrees of freedom. Control of such a system, via the actuators, is challenging, as it is the dynamic performance of the device as a whole, which is the important metric. Hexapods are used in many engineering applications, ranging from flight simulators, to high precision positioning systems for microscopy and manufacturing. This project seeks to develop a deep understanding of current state-of-the-art hexapod systems through extensive modelling. In particular, based on the modelling, it aims to improve understanding of the factors that limit current performance and to seek routes towards improved performance. This is a unique opportunity to achieve a PhD and simultaneously gain real world, industrially based R&D experience with one of the UK’s most dynamic, successful and innovative Engineering companies.
